The night of his birthday we watched Pee Wee's Big Adventure while we ate pizza. The kids loved the movie, and we've been quoting it ever since. Yay for Netflix!<br /></div><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-az2IKgloghw/TXvbq9qtsXI/AAAAAAAABkQ/2-0inPQwQOM/s1600/DSCN5008.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-az2IKgloghw/TXvbq9qtsXI/AAAAAAAABkQ/2-0inPQwQOM/s320/DSCN5008.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583297694210568562" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ltc0GByMGvA/TXvbqpU3GSI/AAAAAAAABkI/i94gFH8o2kw/s1600/DSCN5003.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ltc0GByMGvA/TXvbqpU3GSI/AAAAAAAABkI/i94gFH8o2kw/s320/DSCN5003.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583297688750201122" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AuOXcVp9mWI/TXvbqOV8mxI/AAAAAAAABkA/oXoNzderywg/s1600/DSCN5002.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AuOXcVp9mWI/TXvbqOV8mxI/AAAAAAAABkA/oXoNzderywg/s320/DSCN5002.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583297681506999058" border="0" /></a>I had to do a close-up of the boys' names that Brigham wrote. Chris arranged for the three older kids to help out at an animal shelter in the morning. They had so much fun with the kittens! At the beginning of the year, I decided to propose to the kids that we don't have any screen time on school days. I had been reading a couple of books that suggest getting rid of (or seriously cutting down on) screen time in order to give your kids more free time to use their imagination, their creativity, and to just PLAY.<br /><br />Initially I was a little nervous for a few reasons:<br />1 - I thought my proposal may cause a rebellion of sorts.<br />2 - I was afraid of my kids being bored, because I witnessed how the boys would use their imagination when they were out of screen time for the day; they used it to come up with creative ways to torment each other.<br />3 - I had come to depend on it a lot in order to get some time to myself during the day<br /><br />But at the same time I had grown increasingly frustrated with how much time was spent in front of the screen. We had plenty of options for everyone: TV, desktop, laptop, and 2 ipods. Even though I had tried to limit the kids to an hour a day, I couldn't monitor it for everyone. And with Annie and Noah in school 6 hours a day, plus homework and other activities during the week, any free time they had was usually in front of the screen, even if it <span style="font-style: italic;">was</span> for only an hour a day.<br /><br />We are into our 3rd week of this, and I have been pleasantly surprised! When I mentioned my idea, Annie and Noah were totally fine with it, Hudson didn't really get it, and Brigham was the only one who was a little unhappy about it. I did tell them that I may let them in front of the screen in desperate times, like if I'm sick, or Sylvie has a bad night, and I need some serious rest. But otherwise, on days there are school, the screens are not on. Yes, there are definite drawbacks. I've had to tolerate more messiness (screen time is very un-messy!), and it's a little more tricky to rest in the afternoon (I'm still getting up at night with Sylvie), but most of the time I still can if I need it. But, on the other hand, the kids have played with toys that had not seen the light of day for months, they've made up games, we're doing more art projects and reading more books together. They're helping me more in the kitchen (is that a pro or a con??). And, on those days that they are on the computer a lot, I don't feel guilty anymore.<br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08220923106564423693noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6993751147499276939.post-46860062901756639212010-12-11T19:24:00.000-08:002011-02-20T19:49:31.968-08:00MoonlightingSo I haven't posted anything about the moonlighting that Chris is able to do. He set it up with a small group of Urologists in La Crosse, WI, which is just over an hour away from Rochester. One weekend a month he takes back up call from Friday evening to Sunday evening. We all get to come with him, and they put us up in the Grand Stay Suites. We stay in a two bedroom/living room suite with a kitchenette. We bring food up for some of our meals, but they have a continental breakfast at the hotel, and we usually go out to eat one of the nights. There's a church a few miles away, so we go there Sunday mornings. We go swimming, walk along the river (the hotel is right next to the Mississippi), play outside, watch movies, play games, and we just got a membership at the Children's museum. We have a great time! Most weekends so far Chris has just had to take a few calls, and once in awhile he's had to go into the hospital for an hour or two.<br /><br />In December there was a big snowstorm starting as we were driving out to La Crosse. The next day Chris and the kids played out in the snow (I stayed in with Sylvie).<br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7Yp9STgA6zs/TWHeKXrWq-I/AAAAAAAAADc/jugETkXHKII/s1600/DSCN4765.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7Yp9STgA6zs/TWHeKXrWq-I/AAAAAAAAADc/jugETkXHKII/s320/DSCN4765.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575982083397299170" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-diNItnpEVV0/TWHeNL_aXqI/AAAAAAAAADs/Y6YHUTkh-BU/s1600/DSCN4792.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-diNItnpEVV0/TWHeNL_aXqI/AAAAAAAAADs/Y6YHUTkh-BU/s320/DSCN4792.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575982131799809698" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XHUIn_fMMDQ/TWHeKiGiOlI/AAAAAAAAADk/g6CeuUSNpRE/s1600/DSCN4770.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XHUIn_fMMDQ/TWHeKiGiOlI/AAAAAAAAADk/g6CeuUSNpRE/s320/DSCN4770.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575982086195657298" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UIQt3Yeo6tc/TWHexLlBZnI/AAAAAAAAAD0/JZRp7vIM9TQ/s1600/DSCN4798.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UIQt3Yeo6tc/TWHexLlBZnI/AAAAAAAAAD0/JZRp7vIM9TQ/s320/DSCN4798.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575982750164412018" border="0" /></a><br />They had a huge Christmas light display right on the river by our hotel, so we walked around there and also got to visit Santa and his reindeer.<br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VMLWXfydwB8/TWHgDZ9B-AI/AAAAAAAAAEE/n3qagznt2wo/s1600/DSCN4795.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VMLWXfydwB8/TWHgDZ9B-AI/AAAAAAAAAEE/n3qagznt2wo/s320/DSCN4795.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575984162772482050" border="0" /></a><br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04577133716912300022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6993751147499276939.post-73809922774427705692010-12-09T15:09:00.000-08:002011-02-20T19:50:57.077-08:00Sylvie at 1 month<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kxZV-E6LXB4/TWGhQVs9EVI/AAAAAAAAABs/_JETaTdQYzw/s1600/DSCN4815.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kxZV-E6LXB4/TWGhQVs9EVI/AAAAAAAAABs/_JETaTdQYzw/s320/DSCN4815.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575915115737059666" border="0" /></a>It's definitely been the easiest adjustment after Sylvie. Not because she never cries, but because Annie and Noah are <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">so</span> helpful. I feel okay with leaving her alone in a room with either one of them. They are also able to make meals which we can actually eat!<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a1CMwkkd6S8/TWGhQDz0aiI/AAAAAAAAABk/DnMBGidIgDI/s1600/DSCN4819.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a1CMwkkd6S8/TWGhQDz0aiI/AAAAAAAAABk/DnMBGidIgDI/s320/DSCN4819.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575915110934014498" border="0" /></a>The hardest part of our family's adjustment has been Brigham and Hudson. They both love Sylvie, and have been very sweet with her, but it's everything else in life that they have not been able to handle. I know it's just a phase, but I sure hope this phase ends quickly!<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VBXDoDEPtF4/TWGhPxgVVhI/AAAAAAAAABc/e7w6V4jMLA8/s1600/DSCN4812.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VBXDoDEPtF4/TWGhPxgVVhI/AAAAAAAAABc/e7w6V4jMLA8/s320/DSCN4812.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575915106020447762" border="0" /></a>Like I said earlier, Sylvie has been our best sleeper. She's also a champion burper. At first she didn't spit up very much, and I was hopeful. But after a few weeks, she started spitting up quite a bit . . . and it comes out her nose as well as her mouth. Poor girl, that can't feel good.<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fzSYlXM2CGg/TWGhPkyyRaI/AAAAAAAAABU/B8V5plssVrM/s1600/DSCN4807.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fzSYlXM2CGg/TWGhPkyyRaI/AAAAAAAAABU/B8V5plssVrM/s320/DSCN4807.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575915102608180642" border="0" /></a>Sylvie hates tummy time, but she's content as long as someone is holding her. All I knew was that I was not going to cook a turkey! I was hoping that someone would take pity on us with a new baby, and invite us over. Either that, or we'd be eating turkey sandwiches from the local deli. We talked about it a couple of weeks before Sylvie was born, and I mentioned again that I was not planning on cooking. Chris and Annie then decided that they could do Thanksgiving dinner. Annie got so excited about doing Thanksgiving with just our family (we've always been with extended family or with friends), and she said, "So if anyone invites us over, you'll say no, right Mom?"<br />I was surprised with how good I was feeling by Thanksgiving. Annie and Chris made the pies (apple, pumpkin, and banana cream), and on Thanksgiving morning Chris and I were busy little bees in the kitchen (I even helped with the turkey). With just a few mishaps (way-too-salty gravy, and rolls that ended up as biscuits, sort of, because they didn't get enough yeast), we had a feast!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bj4IxuXG1Os/TWGajMHRSdI/AAAAAAAAAAU/7_OgAWg-iKM/s1600/RSCN4728.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bj4IxuXG1Os/TWGajMHRSdI/AAAAAAAAAAU/7_OgAWg-iKM/s200/RSCN4728.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575907742999202258" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7QAmgaUPpjE/TWGajIMrotI/AAAAAAAAAAM/HZ66FbLVJTM/s1600/DSCN4712.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7QAmgaUPpjE/TWGajIMrotI/AAAAAAAAAAM/HZ66FbLVJTM/s200/DSCN4712.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575907741948158674" border="0" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q5gyyYXN1qA/TWGajRP6x2I/AAAAAAAAAAc/XG7sssy9ewA/s1600/DSCN4720.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q5gyyYXN1qA/TWGajRP6x2I/AAAAAAAAAAc/XG7sssy9ewA/s200/DSCN4720.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575907744377653090" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wZLcsudafKA/TWGaj_AwIiI/AAAAAAAAAAk/Ml02P4cy7no/s1600/DSCN4724.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wZLcsudafKA/TWGaj_AwIiI/AAAAAAAAAAk/Ml02P4cy7no/s200/DSCN4724.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575907756662071842" border="0" /></a></div><br />I had to add that last picture; it's Brigham's plate before he started eating. I love it.<br /><br />Sylvie has definitely been our best sleeper right from the get-go. A good chunk of the time when I can tell that she's getting tired, I lay her down with her binky, and she goes to sleep on her own. Also, right from the beginning, she was going three or four hours at night, then going right back to sleep after she ate. There have only been a handful of bad nights. Before you get all envious, I have to say, I think we deserve it. None of our other kids slept this well for months. <br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"></div><div id="refHTML"></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08220923106564423693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6993751147499276939.post-16120054313530279202010-11-20T19:30:00.000-08:002011-02-06T19:45:44.669-08:00Sylvie's first bathI gave Sylvie her first bath a few days after she came home. I remember giving Annie a bath on her first night home from the hospital, and pretty much every night after that. But the more kids we have, the more days they go in between baths. After bathing a toddler covered in dirt, spaghettios, and sticky sucker, I realized that a newborn really doesn't get all that dirty.<br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TU9qJfgIu0I/AAAAAAAABi4/nvrKAx34DQI/s1600/DSCN4663.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TU9qJfgIu0I/AAAAAAAABi4/nvrKAx34DQI/s320/DSCN4663.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570787975388248898" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TU9qJ8xpwRI/AAAAAAAABjA/RzO-ePgcFHU/s1600/DSCN4667.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TU9qJ8xpwRI/AAAAAAAABjA/RzO-ePgcFHU/s320/DSCN4667.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570787983246344466" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TU9oOQZX93I/AAAAAAAABio/TqjZ9mXfZXI/s1600/DSCN4671.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TU9oOQZX93I/AAAAAAAABio/TqjZ9mXfZXI/s320/DSCN4671.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570785858209445746" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TU9oO70WLgI/AAAAAAAABiw/Siy1OuooigY/s1600/DSCN4674.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TU9oO70WLgI/AAAAAAAABiw/Siy1OuooigY/s320/DSCN4674.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570785869865299458" border="0" /></a>All clean with fuzzy hair! Oh, right . . . it's gone away in a blur of bleary-eyed nighttime feedings, in 3,000 diaper changes (for the newborn <span style="font-style: italic;">and</span> the 2 year old), and in just trying to keep afloat running a family of seven. I've decided that I love 9:00 a.m. church (we just switched) because now there are wide open Sunday afternoons, during which I really really hope to catch up on blogging. <span style="font-style: italic;">Yeah, right</span>, you're thinking, <span style="font-style: italic;">I've heard that story before</span>. Oh well, better late than never, right???<br /><br />So, my due date was Nov. 15th, and I was really nervous because Mayo does not believe in inducing labor early unless there is a medical reason. I've been induced with my last two labors because I dilated to a 6 with Brigham (with no contractions) a week early, and to a 4 with Hudson a week early. Both doctors induced me so that I didn't go into labor on my own and have the baby on the living room floor. I figured that should be medical enough reason for Mayo, <span style="font-style: italic;">but not so</span>.<br />Three weeks before I was due, I was dilated to a 1, then the next week I was dilated to almost a 5. My mom got here on Nov. 6th, our fridge and freezer were stocked, baby clothes were washed, bags were packed. <span style="font-style: italic;">We were ready.</span> On Monday night, Nov. 8th, I felt completely trashed. I remember crying to Chris, telling him I was so tired of being pregnant, and I was so nervous about going into labor on my own and not having time to get an epidural (I know, I know, I really like those drugs!). We went to bed, and I had a dream about trying to do my math homework but I couldn't because my stomach hurt. It woke me up at 1:00 a.m. and I had three more contractions in 20 minutes, so I woke up Chris. We got things together and left for the hospital at around 2:00 a.m. Luckily it only takes about 5 minutes to get downtown. Chris stopped at a stoplight, and that was the closest I got to yelling when I told him to <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;font-size:180%;" >"Go</span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:180%;" >!"</span><br />I <span style="font-weight: bold;">so</span> wanted an epidural, and that was the first thing I asked about when I got in my hospital bed. I got the worst of both worlds, because as everyone knows, it's no fun to get a giant needle in your spine. Having to stay still while feeling contractions in the front and a needle jabbing me in the back was not so easy! They gave me a spinal/epidural combo, because a spinal kicks in faster. But in this case, it was not fast enough. <span style="font-style: italic;">My worst fears were coming true!</span> The spinal did take the edge off a few contractions, but I felt <span style="font-weight: bold;">everything</span> when I was pushing. I'm not going to lie - it was awful!<br />But then she was here, and although all that pain was not forgotten, it was definitely worth it. I'm a wee bit obsessed with knitting little hats. Here are some pictures of a few of the hats I've made:<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3xIRi0FhI/AAAAAAAABb8/o3qkzzQooCw/s1600/DSCN3249.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3xIRi0FhI/AAAAAAAABb8/o3qkzzQooCw/s320/DSCN3249.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529841041931507218" border="0" /></a>Annie's winter hat<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3yRRNrOjI/AAAAAAAABcM/QBhbYB4E6G0/s1600/New+Image.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3yRRNrOjI/AAAAAAAABcM/QBhbYB4E6G0/s320/New+Image.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529842295973296690" border="0" /></a>I made these for my neices' birthdays<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL30a4YekaI/AAAAAAAABcU/BXfYbFPNKqs/s1600/DSCN4533.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL30a4YekaI/AAAAAAAABcU/BXfYbFPNKqs/s320/DSCN4533.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529844660129665442" border="0" /></a>Hudson's winter hat<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3xIiZkxuI/AAAAAAAABcE/nru8q8WML58/s1600/DSCN4343.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3xIiZkxuI/AAAAAAAABcE/nru8q8WML58/s320/DSCN4343.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529841046456157922" border="0" /></a>Hudson's modeling one of the hats I made for my twin nephews' birthdays - the other one is just like it, but it's tan instead of brown<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL31AgbeMyI/AAAAAAAABcc/nEK4vbapKOk/s1600/DSCN4535.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL31AgbeMyI/AAAAAAAABcc/nEK4vbapKOk/s320/DSCN4535.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529845306534802210" border="0" /></a>This one is for Sylvie - I hope it fits her when she comes!<br /></div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08220923106564423693noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6993751147499276939.post-85074380118583302302010-10-03T09:29:00.000-07:002010-10-23T08:12:25.142-07:00BostonSo at the end of residency, Chris was given a "traveling fellowship" where he was given $ from Cleveland Clinic to go to any hospital, learn something, then report back to the Clinic. It was enough $ that I could go with him! He asked me where I wanted to go, so I chose Boston. Chris' parents flew in to watch the kids (THANK YOU!!!!!), and we flew out on Saturday, Sept. 18th. Because our plane out of Minneapolis was delayed, we missed our connection in Milwaukee, so we got to hang out in the airport for 6 hours. We finally got to Boston, then drove to Cape Cod where we booked a Bed and Breakfast called The Night Heron. I wish we had more time to enjoy it because it was darling, but by the time we settled in, then ate dinner (at a place called Land Ho! - awesome clam chowder), we were exhausted (we'd been up since 3:00 am), so we went to bed early.<br /><div><br /></div><br /><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238);"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523862318031866306" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 320px; cursor: pointer; height: 240px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TKizgvZ0icI/AAAAAAAABXI/pu5CQbIhmAs/s320/DSCN4372.JPG" border="0" /></span></div><br /><div><div style="text-align: center;">The Night Heron. I can't imagine anything better than a B&B in Cape Cod!</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">The next morning, we ate the best breakfast! Homemade granola and yogurt, pumpkin bread, fresh fruit, and hot chocolate. The owner, Lorraine, sat and talked with us while we ate. </div><br /><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238);"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523862311879696002" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 320px; cursor: pointer; height: 240px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TKizgYfB3oI/AAAAAAAABXA/Y1UAkg9-h_c/s320/DSCN4370.JPG" border="0" /></span></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Our room - The Green Tea Room. We learned that the name changed to Chattam Pier Fish Market. We walked all over, trying to find the restaurant, but we finally found out that it was in this building where people came to buy fresh fish by the pound. We ordered our lunch and sat by the ocean on a bench. It was definitely the most expensive meal we've eaten that has come out of a styrofoam box!</div><br /><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238);"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523870832440185826" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; width: 320px; cursor: pointer; height: 240px; text-align: center;" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TKi7QWC9E-I/AAAAAAAABXw/TVLCo0iJl6w/s320/DSCN4385.JPG" border="0" /></span></span></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Although lunch was good, probably because it was so fresh (caught that morning), but what we really loved was the lobster bisque that we bought there. We warmed it in the microwave in our hotel room that night for dinner. Y.U.M.</div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">We checked into our hotel outside of Boston, in Peabody, late that afternoon, rested up, then set out to find Walden Pond. Chris and I are reading <span style="font-style: italic;">Walden</span> together, and let me tell you, that is a chore! There are a lot of great nuggets of wisdom, but I'm not sure we'll ever get through it. But we've read enough to appreciate what Thoureau did. We mapquested directions, but still had a devil of a time trying to find the pond. We kept thinking, "Why isn't this place better labeled??" We finally found the pond, and then took these pics (the book in the pictures is <span style="font-style: italic;">Walden</span>, in case you couldn't guess)<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3ssrukhJI/AAAAAAAABak/fgU7F34ZiYU/s1600/DSCN4394.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3ssrukhJI/AAAAAAAABak/fgU7F34ZiYU/s200/DSCN4394.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529836169877292178" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3ss6Nf6aI/AAAAAAAABas/s3sKyjOG6Hw/s1600/DSCN4395.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3ss6Nf6aI/AAAAAAAABas/s3sKyjOG6Hw/s200/DSCN4395.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529836173765110178" border="0" /></a><br />It was getting dark and the mosquitoes were coming out in droves, so we left soon after. Once we got back to our hotel, Chris looked a few things up on the computer and was reminded that there are <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">two</span> Walden Ponds near Boston . . . we went to the wrong one!<br /><br />The next day, Monday, Chris was scheduled to be scrubbed into a couple of cases at one of the hospitals there, so I had the day to myself. He had the car, so I couldn't drive anywhere, but I don't think I would have dared by myself. We were quickly learning that the streets in Boston are very hard to get around in, and they are not labeled very well! So, I spent the day exercising, reading, writing, knitting, and sleeping. It was awesome!! Chris made it back around 4:30, and we took off for the North End of Boston.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3stq4lKfI/AAAAAAAABa8/VJk09PoXq9s/s1600/DSCN4397.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3stq4lKfI/AAAAAAAABa8/VJk09PoXq9s/s200/DSCN4397.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529836186830711282" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3stT1UX8I/AAAAAAAABa0/b6Tq5uMrhOo/s1600/DSCN4396.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3stT1UX8I/AAAAAAAABa0/b6Tq5uMrhOo/s200/DSCN4396.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529836180643012546" border="0" /></a><br />We barely made it into the Old North Church before they closed, but we did get to browse the cute gift shop.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3qSpgYa2I/AAAAAAAABZ0/trWByy81pKY/s1600/DSCN4399.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3qSpgYa2I/AAAAAAAABZ0/trWByy81pKY/s320/DSCN4399.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529833523581053794" border="0" /></a><br />Paul Revere's house.<br /><br />We ate dinner on the patio of an Irish Pub called Goody Anne's. It was great food!! The North End is also full of Italian restaurants and shops. We were told that Gelateria had a great gelato, and that we had to try something at Mike's Pastries. So we ate gelato for dessert (YUM), then got some pastries for later. We missed our exit to our hotel, then wandered around for quite awhile in a not-so-nice-neck of Boston. We made sure the top was up on the convertible!<br /><br />Chris didn't have anything scheduled for Tuesday, so we got up for an early session in the Boston Temple.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3qS1VZZSI/AAAAAAAABZ8/Q5qOglqec_E/s1600/DSCN4401.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TL3qS1VZZSI/AAAAAAAABZ8/Q5qOglqec_E/s320/DSCN4401.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529833526756205858" border="0" /></a><br />It was beautiful! This is Annie's last year of elementary school (!!), so it's fun that all three kids are together this year.</div><div><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TKikWP9dfUI/AAAAAAAABWo/mloryCCnEW0/s1600/DSCN4345.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TKikWP9dfUI/AAAAAAAABWo/mloryCCnEW0/s320/DSCN4345.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523845645118307650" border="0" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">They needed jackets - it was a blustery first day of school!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TKikHw_qTvI/AAAAAAAABWg/3D6pKWQR8M8/s1600/DSCN4349.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TKikHw_qTvI/AAAAAAAABWg/3D6pKWQR8M8/s320/DSCN4349.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523845396287868658" border="0" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Annie, the big 5th grader</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TKikHsWim2I/AAAAAAAABWY/w-Eu9zWXrAs/s1600/DSCN4348.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TKikHsWim2I/AAAAAAAABWY/w-Eu9zWXrAs/s320/DSCN4348.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523845395041655650" border="0" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Noah, the 3rd grader. Kindergarten here is half day, which is very good for Brig. When I picked him up after the first day, I saw him leaning against the wall, looking forlorn. When he saw me, he ran to me and started to cry. I thought, "Oh great, he got into trouble on his very first day." But no, he told me that it was just a really long time to be away from home. But after that, he's loved it. He runs out with a big smile on his face and tells me all about his day. He's also learned the Jefferson school song, and it melts my heart to hear him sing it.</div><div style="text-align: center;">Also, notice the shirt? I don't like it much, but it's Brig's absolute favorite because it's his "chinese shirt". To him, the designs on it look like chinese characters. He and Chris picked it out together, and Brig immediately announced that he was going to wear it on his first day. I cringed, but decided that it was a battle not worth fighting.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">So, after two days at school, I asked Annie and Noah if they like Jefferson or Lomond better. Noah said he didn't know, but Annie immediately said "Lomond." I must admit, there are some things about Lomond that we probably won't see anywhere else. But I have noticed that they don't micromanage things here as much as they did at Lomond, which I'm happy about. The kids have made some great friends, and they have wonderful teachers. We're happy here!</div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08220923106564423693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6993751147499276939.post-5903817400345738872010-10-02T08:36:00.000-07:002010-10-15T08:51:24.128-07:00School Fashion Show<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The day before school started the kids did a fashion show for our FHE activity</span><br /><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span></div><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><br /></span><br /> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh2YNRhYLI/AAAAAAAABY4/vHpzBC4ceGI/s1600/DSCN4338.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh2YNRhYLI/AAAAAAAABY4/vHpzBC4ceGI/s320/DSCN4338.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528298700849373362" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh2X__1C8I/AAAAAAAABYw/YRnDR7GNnxo/s1600/DSCN4337.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh2X__1C8I/AAAAAAAABYw/YRnDR7GNnxo/s320/DSCN4337.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528298697285503938" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh1oleybcI/AAAAAAAABYg/Rd6BbZ90eHo/s1600/DSCN4340.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh1oleybcI/AAAAAAAABYg/Rd6BbZ90eHo/s320/DSCN4340.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528297882713746882" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh1oGisZaI/AAAAAAAABYY/s5qvPcds20o/s1600/DSCN4333.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh1oGisZaI/AAAAAAAABYY/s5qvPcds20o/s320/DSCN4333.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528297874408629666" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></span><br /><span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh1npNKuQI/AAAAAAAABYQ/1JflQIQxz6E/s1600/DSCN4326.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh1npNKuQI/AAAAAAAABYQ/1JflQIQxz6E/s320/DSCN4326.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528297866533714178" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh1nMo8O4I/AAAAAAAABYI/aU3PzhHPmmM/s1600/DSCN4325.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TLh1nMo8O4I/AAAAAAAABYI/aU3PzhHPmmM/s320/DSCN4325.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528297858865576834" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08220923106564423693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6993751147499276939.post-63030595570685464822010-09-04T12:46:00.000-07:002011-07-03T19:57:10.845-07:00Rochester summer<div style="text-align: center;">So, I had big plans for our summer, but with trying to get settled after moving, our long road trip, and pregnancy, not a whole lot panned out. We decided to take three days to come home, and we planned on staying in Denver that night. We stopped for lunch in Grand Junction so we could see where the Chipmans lived and hang out with them one more time.<br />We got to Denver right around dinnertime, and we planned to take the kids to eat at Casa Bonita. We had previously told them all about how cool the place is, and everyone was excited to eat there. We didn't think about the fact that it was a Friday night and maybe everyone in Denver would have the same idea as us. We pulled into the parking lot and saw that tons of people were waiting to get in. Plan B - we went across the street and ate at Qdoba.<br />We left Saturday morning with the destination of Council Bluffs, IA, so we could see Winter Quarters the next day. Noah felt queasy since he woke up, and then he threw up all across Nebraska. Poor kid - throwing up while riding in a car is awful! Luckily no one else got sick.<br />We got to our hotel in Council Bluffs that night. It was a Quality Inn, and we soon began to wonder about the quality of this Quality Inn - hallways and rooms that smelled like smoke, a toilet that ran all night, a bathtub that didn't plug, and a swimming pool with a cracked and bubbled floor. We were glad to leave!<br />We didn't time things right, so we didn't make it to church the next morning, but we did get to see the visitor's center and the temple grounds in Winter Quarters. What a neat place! It is truly full of the spirit of the pioneers. <br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-202EQwTde4c/TZi35xIM-RI/AAAAAAAABvo/MpZldFqUlts/s1600/DSCN4261.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-202EQwTde4c/TZi35xIM-RI/AAAAAAAABvo/MpZldFqUlts/s200/DSCN4261.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591421140448639250" border="0" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KWKBGaWgVos/TZi3nCbKfmI/AAAAAAAABvA/xI4j6NT6HZ0/s1600/DSCN4250.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KWKBGaWgVos/TZi3nCbKfmI/AAAAAAAABvA/xI4j6NT6HZ0/s200/DSCN4250.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591420818674056802" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DDT0bM8nGew/TZi3nbjS-gI/AAAAAAAABvI/vhWgfa-4m7M/s1600/DSCN4252.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DDT0bM8nGew/TZi3nbjS-gI/AAAAAAAABvI/vhWgfa-4m7M/s200/DSCN4252.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591420825419053570" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mM11DjGDxNI/TZi3oafE_HI/AAAAAAAABvg/CyDe5njYKqM/s1600/DSCN4256.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mM11DjGDxNI/TZi3oafE_HI/AAAAAAAABvg/CyDe5njYKqM/s200/DSCN4256.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591420842312793202" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Dressing up like pioneers in the visitor's center<br /><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7ZTd5SQ-a98/TZi3oCq6A1I/AAAAAAAABvY/Tj4m7NjIOWk/s1600/DSCN4260.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7ZTd5SQ-a98/TZi3oCq6A1I/AAAAAAAABvY/Tj4m7NjIOWk/s200/DSCN4260.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591420835919954770" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D9GTobFIOm0/TZi3nzK0gkI/AAAAAAAABvQ/RBY9ctl87iw/s1600/DSCN4258.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D9GTobFIOm0/TZi3nzK0gkI/AAAAAAAABvQ/RBY9ctl87iw/s200/DSCN4258.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591420831758844482" border="0" /></a><br /><br />We ate lunch on the temple grounds, then made it the rest of the way home. We decided to drive out west to see our families. On July 31st we woke everyone up before 5:00 a.m. and headed out to Mt. Rushmore. Chris and I were surprised with how well all the kids did on the road that day! We made several stops before we got to Mt. Rushmore, including a rest stop somewhere in SD for lunch. Within a few minutes monster mosquitoes were eating us alive, so we sped things up and jumped back in the van.<br /><br />Another stop we made was at Wall Drug. What a memorable place!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-meFsVfFrCxI/TZC4ANhsKXI/AAAAAAAABnw/_WyJ1FHYwLw/s1600/DSCN4033.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-meFsVfFrCxI/TZC4ANhsKXI/AAAAAAAABnw/_WyJ1FHYwLw/s200/DSCN4033.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589169451337263474" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IB7yiYORkm8/TY_NOnNkjCI/AAAAAAAABmA/BROgTBUf164/s1600/DSCN4027.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IB7yiYORkm8/TY_NOnNkjCI/AAAAAAAABmA/BROgTBUf164/s200/DSCN4027.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588911313517841442" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Aj34tTSqNMQ/TZC4A1M06BI/AAAAAAAABn4/gf7wiTLoVJ4/s1600/DSCN4034.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Aj34tTSqNMQ/TZC4A1M06BI/AAAAAAAABn4/gf7wiTLoVJ4/s200/DSCN4034.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589169461987174418" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wl2AVw-2CpM/TZC4B7P92NI/AAAAAAAABoI/jtbEmdf1Aho/s1600/DSCN4029.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wl2AVw-2CpM/TZC4B7P92NI/AAAAAAAABoI/jtbEmdf1Aho/s200/DSCN4029.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589169480790825170" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Wall Drug started out years ago as a simple drug store that offered free ice water to hot, weary travelers (we were definitely some of them - it was sooo hot that day!). We saw a 10 year old boy climbing up the tower with his parents, then rappelling back down, and Noah decided that he wanted to do that someday as well.<br /><br />So we had to drive from the top right corner of Wyoming to the bottom left corner, and holy cow, that was the longest drive EVER. There have been so many times where I've seen drivers slam on their brakes so they don't run over any of them. I've even been given dirty looks from these people while I'm sitting in my car waiting for them to stroll by.<br /><em><strong>-The driving.</strong></em><br />The traffic lights have the worst timing I've ever seen! And, the signs that say "No right turn on red light." I can understand if there are a bunch of streets that intersect, but at a four-way stop?? Really? And, I don't know who designed the street layout, but I'd like to meet them and ask what they were smoking when they did it. After years of being in Cleveland, I'd still get turned around if I wasn't careful, and I'd end up going in the complete opposite direction than I thought. And the road conditions were terrible after every winter. I thought I was going to lose our van in some of those potholes.<br /><em><strong>- The grayness.</strong></em><br />Being so near Lake Erie, we'd have a lot of gray skies, especially in the winter. I've never appreciated the sun so much as during our time there!<br /><strong><em>- The bugs.</em></strong><br />Good riddance to slugs, grubs, and silverfish. Okay, not so much the silverfish - I've seen a couple here in Rochester, but not nearly as many. Never seen one? Lucky you. Here's a picture.<br /><br /><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.hackettstownlife.com/images/forum/2009/09/56681b4aa97bf43cea08aeb8648c850b7e66fb0d.jpg"><img style="width: 158px; height: 151px;" alt="" src="http://www.hackettstownlife.com/images/forum/2009/09/56681b4aa97bf43cea08aeb8648c850b7e66fb0d.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /></div><div><em><strong>-The customer service.</strong></em> </div><div>Do they do employee training on being neglectful, or just plain rude?? If you haven't already seen it, look up "Bon Qui Qui at King Burger" on You Tube. With a very small number of exceptions, it pretty much sums up our 6 years there in Cleveland. It's hilarious.<br /><br /><strong><span style="font-size:130%;">What we will miss:</span></strong><br /><em><strong>- Our insurance.</strong></em> </div><div>No monthly premiums, low co-pays. And, do you want to know how much it cost to have Brigham and Hudson? $50.00 each time. Maybe you didn't want to know; it might be depressing for you. I know it is for me now that we're having another baby with different insurance! </div><div><div><div><div><em><strong>-Nature.</strong></em> </div><br /><div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznIH4NgII/AAAAAAAABUY/BEDG4Jx9sYs/s1600/boys1.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516037770361798786" style="width: 200px; height: 134px;" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznIH4NgII/AAAAAAAABUY/BEDG4Jx9sYs/s200/boys1.jpg" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznJi4REVI/AAAAAAAABUw/d_f94FlO6-s/s1600/DSCN2704.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516037794789658962" style="width: 150px; height: 200px;" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznJi4REVI/AAAAAAAABUw/d_f94FlO6-s/s200/DSCN2704.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznIs7ljnI/AAAAAAAABUg/4ctcC8pwTQk/s1600/IMG_0688.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516037780308070002" style="width: 150px; height: 200px;" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznIs7ljnI/AAAAAAAABUg/4ctcC8pwTQk/s200/IMG_0688.JPG" border="0" /></a></div> </div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznKKQ2YfI/AAAAAAAABU4/d94W097ai7Y/s1600/DSCN2746.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516037805361750514" style="width: 150px; height: 200px;" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznKKQ2YfI/AAAAAAAABU4/d94W097ai7Y/s200/DSCN2746.JPG" border="0" /></a></div><div>Ohio doesn't have the mountains and the ruggedness of the west, but I fell in love with all the trees, the green, and the lakes. It was close to our house, so we'd run there whenever we needed something small. It's been owned forever by two brothers. The same people worked there the whole time we lived in Shaker Heights, and they were so friendly. Maybe I had a lost look on my face every time I walked in, but within a few minutes I always had someone asking if I needed help. And they actually knew what they were talking about! It's small, so there isn't a big selection of things, and it's a bit more expensive than Home Depot or Lowes, but I thought it was worth it.<br /><strong><em>-Our mechanic.</em></strong><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIzthX3y2iI/AAAAAAAABVI/B6-DavG4KeA/s1600/DSCN3857.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516044801221515810" style="width: 200px; height: 150px;" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIzthX3y2iI/AAAAAAAABVI/B6-DavG4KeA/s200/DSCN3857.JPG" border="0" /></a></div><div>Tom at Alternative Car Care Solutions. They were honest, cheap, they knew what they were doing, and they didn't try and get us to get 10 other things "fixed" whenever we brought our van in for something. So, when they would actually suggest something, I knew it really needed to be done. I called one time to ask a question, and I felt like I was on "Click and Clack," because Tom said what he thought the problem was, then suggested something over the phone. I tried it, and it worked! It's a bit of a drive, down on Mayfield Rd., but if you have a Japanese made car (that's all they work on), it's totally worth the drive.<br /><strong><em>-All the pick-your-own fruit farms.</em></strong><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIzxUxcmO-I/AAAAAAAABV4/zLam8dYL3Rk/s1600/DSCN1655.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516048982794976226" style="width: 200px; height: 150px;" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIzxUxcmO-I/AAAAAAAABV4/zLam8dYL3Rk/s200/DSCN1655.JPG" border="0" /></a> <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516044826870303042" style="width: 200px; height: 150px;" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIzti3a8SUI/AAAAAAAABVg/BD42d39TyGI/s200/IMG_0856.JPG" border="0" /> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIzxVQ3-ESI/AAAAAAAABWA/KZnGT9XFSVA/s1600/DSCN2413.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516048991231283490" style="width: 200px; height: 150px;" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIzxVQ3-ESI/AAAAAAAABWA/KZnGT9XFSVA/s200/DSCN2413.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznJayctqI/AAAAAAAABUo/lSvhogGJgOQ/s1600/DSCN2485.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516037792617772706" style="width: 150px; height: 200px;" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4JWtA2CCZbg/TIznJayctqI/AAAAAAAABUo/lSvhogGJgOQ/s200/DSCN2485.JPG" border="0" /></a></div><div>Patterson's for strawberries in June, Voytko farms for blueberries in July, Rosby's for raspberries in August and September, and Patterson's and Edy's for apples in the fall. Sure, there are bad things about it, like any other city. And we learned pretty quickly about the neighborhoods to stay away from, especially at night. But those of you who are still there in Cleveland, don't waste your time dwelling on the negative parts of it! Take advantage of all the wonderful things about living there. We pulled out on Friday, June 25th. I wouldn't recommend moving while pregnant - it wasn't fun. Although I felt like we had been working hard for weeks to be ready to move, that last day was chaos. By the time we left, I was so tired and overwhelmed by everything that I couldn't really think about the fact that <span style="font-style: italic;">we were leaving our first house</span>. This was a place that we had lived in for six years, which is the longest stretch since Chris and I have been married. We went from 2 to 4 kids while here. We bought our first minivan, acquired our first (and last, at least for quite awhile) pets. Annie and Noah started school a block away, and they, along with Brigham, learned to ride their 2-wheelers on our driveway. So many memories. I wish there had been more time to really think about it all before we left.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WL-kGOVs_2Q/TWGn6KIgF0I/AAAAAAAAAC8/hBuJdKW7-_E/s1600/1130.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WL-kGOVs_2Q/TWGn6KIgF0I/AAAAAAAAAC8/hBuJdKW7-_E/s320/1130.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575922431255648066" border="0" /></a>We broke up the driving into two days. Our destination was Chicago the first night. I drove the van with Chris' mom and Hudson. Chris drove the moving van with our car hooked up behind it. Chris' dad drove his car. Annie, Noah, and Brigham rotated between all of the different vehicles. The driving was going fine until we got into Chicago. The traffic was awful, it was dark and raining, and we were all trying not to lose each other. Chris' dad took a wrong exit and got lost. He finally showed up at the hotel about an hour after the rest of us. I've never been so frazzled in all my life!<br />The driving was much better the next day, and we made it to Rochester in the afternoon.<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eiG4Squkc7k/TWGn5ZSYk4I/AAAAAAAAACs/hMNZ7d1IdPI/s1600/DSCN3909.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eiG4Squkc7k/TWGn5ZSYk4I/AAAAAAAAACs/hMNZ7d1IdPI/s320/DSCN3909.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5575922418143761282" border="0" /></a>We were welcomed by a bunch of ward members who helped us unload the moving van.
